Brief

Also called creative brief, campaign brief

A brief is the document a brand sends describing what they want made: the concept, the talking points, the format, the deliverables and the deadline.

A good one names the hook, the three things that must be said, the length, the aspect ratio, whether captions are burned in, and how many rounds of changes are included. A bad one says "be authentic" and leaves everything else to be discovered during revisions.

Read it for what is missing rather than what is there. The three clauses that decide the money are usually the ones not written down: the usage rights, the term, and whether raw footage is expected.

Reply to a thin brief with the questions rather than the price. A brand that answers them has told you what to charge; one that will not is a brand whose revisions will be unbounded.

  • Deliverable

A deliverable is one finished thing you owe the brand, counted precisely, so three videos and their vertical cutdowns is six deliverables rather than three.

  • UGC creator

A UGC creator makes advertising videos that look like a real person's own post, for brands to run on their own channels or as paid ads, and is paid for the content rather than for an audience.

  • Hook

The hook is the opening of a UGC video, usually the first one to three seconds, whose only job is to stop the scroll before the viewer's thumb moves.
