Raw footage

Also called raws, source files, unedited files

Raw footage is the unedited source clips from a shoot, and handing it to a brand lets them recut it into videos you never agreed to and never see.

Most briefs ask for it as an afterthought, filed under deliverables next to the aspect ratio. It is not a file format question. A brand holding your raws can produce ten more ads out of one shoot, and none of them are covered by the licence you priced.

If you hand it over, price it at about 25% on top and make the licence cover the raws explicitly with the same channels and the same end date as the finished video. Otherwise the finished cut expires and the recuts do not.

The reasonable middle ground, which brands usually accept, is that they get the raws for one named campaign and the raws are deleted or revert at the end of the term.

  • Usage rights

Usage rights are what a brand is allowed to do with a video after you deliver it: which channels it can appear on, whether they can put ad spend behind it, and for how long.

  • Deliverable

A deliverable is one finished thing you owe the brand, counted precisely, so three videos and their vertical cutdowns is six deliverables rather than three.

  • Perpetuity

Perpetuity means the brand's licence to use your video has no end date, so they can keep running it, including as a paid ad, forever and without paying again.
